5 Great Art Galleries In Barcelona You Shouldn’t Miss

OUR BARCELONA ART GALLERIES GUIDE

The best art galleries in Barcelona are gathered around a few blocks on Consell de Cent street, but some other great ones are hidden in the alleys of the Old Town. Finding them can be a huge time investment unless you know exactly where you are going and what are you going to find there.

Some times we get to visit an art gallery during our tours. And often my guests would ask me where was the art gallery district and which were the best in town. Such questions inspired me to write today’s post. I hope you find it interesting!

Here is where to buy art in Barcelona:

1

Sala Dalmau

Located in Consell de Cent street since 1979, this gallery is dedicated to recovering historical avant-garde artists and promoting new contemporary artists. They collaborate in itinerary vanguards exhibitions in collaboration with other art galleries and museums, such as Picasso Museum, MNAC, CAAM… Their art for sale includes artists such as Virgina Lasheras, Le Corbusier, Joaquín Torres-Garcia and Javier Vilató have exhibited their work in Dalmau gallery.

2

This gallery, located on Balmes street, was a pioneer in organizing international contemporary exhibitions in Barcelona. In order to approach contemporary artists to the public, they participate regularly in famous international Art Fairs such as Arco in Madrid, Art Basel and Art Basel-Miami Beach. Some of the artists they work with are Hernández Pijuan, Javier Peñafiel, Ràfols Casamada, Eulàlia Valldosera, Perejaume.

4

Setba

Not very often you can buy or admire works of an artist in the same apartment where he lived. This is the case of Setba, an unusual art gallery hidden in the flat in Plaça Reial where transgressor Barcelona artist Ocaña lived in the 1970’s (you can actually still see a fresco he painted in one of the ceilings of the now art gallery.

Aside from Ocaña, they work with a variety of promising Spanish contemporary artists and they are also  very committed with the social and cultural life of the district.

5

Galeria Mayoral

This gallery is specialized in great Spanish and International artists. Among the Spanish ones we can find Miró, Picasso, Dalí, Torres García, Tàpies or Chillida. This gallery operates on a global level that’s why there are Calder, Chagall, Leger, Magritte, Bacon, Warhol or Basquiat among their international exhibitions.

AND BONUS! The oldest art gallery in Barcelona:

6

Sala Parés

The oldest gallery in Barcelona (and probably the oldest of all the art galleries in Spain, too), has been located since 1877 in Petritxol street, in the heart of the Old town. It was a reference in the Modernisme times, when a young Pablo Picasso exhibited his early works there, and later on, surrealists Joan Miro and Salvador Dali followed his example.

  1. Nice list! I would also recommend Artur Ramon Gallery in the Gothic Quarter (Carrer de la Palla, 25), which displays ancient, modern and contemporary art. The gallery has been operating for 100 years, managed by 4 generations of the same family.

      Hi Dan!
You are right! I actually also considered it for my post, but since all my articles are limited to only 5 choices + 1 bonus, in the end I decided to leave it out. Thanks for your contribution!
