20 Best Barcelona vegetarian restaurants
RECOMMENDATIONS BY A VEGETARIAN IN BARCELONA
Are there any vegetarian restaurants in town where we can go? Lori K. and her family are vegetarian, and they were worried about not having enough food options during their stay. I answered them not to worry: I’ve been vegetarian myself since 2010, and I’m a huge foodie, so I was able to recommend them my favorite local venues. In fact, nowadays most “normal” restaurants have enough veggie options in their menus to have a decent meal even if you don’t eat meat or fish. These last 10 years Barcelona has actually become one of the most vegetarian-friendly cities in Spain and there’s no need to hunt for pure vegetarian restaurants to avoid starving.
And the options for vegans have actually grown a lot, as well. I’m actually seeing a trend of more vegan restaurants than vegetarian restaurants opening lately. And I do have a post about vegan restaurants in my blog as well. So for the purpose of this post I’ll be focusing on (ovo-lacto) vegetarian restaurants, and just mention some vegan and vegetarian-friendly options in each area, so you have as many choices as possible when your stomach starts growling.
Best vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona Old Town
1
Teresa Carles
She decided to introduce creative cuisine instead, and modernize the look of her venue (BTW, very centrally located near Plaça Catalunya). It’s been a success: arrive early if you don’t want to have to wait to get a table! Vegetarian and vegan options available. She also owns the trendy flexiterian restaurant Flax & Kale nearby.
LOCATION: Raval, very close to Plaça Catalunya (city center)

Sesamo
Located in an alley of Raval, just of the Sant Antoni Market, this is another of the classics in town. Small and cozy, its short menu that combines Spanish Tapas with international food (from Italy slightly more than other areas) is a great choice for a romantic dinner that can be topped with one of their lovely wines, their peach sangria or one of their cocktails.
LOCATION: Raval, very close to Sant Antoni Market.

3
The Green Spot
Classed 3rd best vegetable restaurant in Spain and 29 in the World, their motto is “veggie for veggies and for non veggies”. Their menu features vegetarian and vegan specialties from all over the world: Asian, Mexican, Indian, Italian and of course Spanish. All with the “healthy food” idea in mind. It is located in Port Vell, and it has a Nordic, young and fancy feel.
LOCATION: Born, right on the age of the Barceloneta district.

Maoz Vegetarian
When I finish one of my tours of the Gothic Quarter too late to head come to cook lunch, or when I don’t have much time to waste, Maoz is my go-to place in the area. And if you are a fan of falafel, its name might ring a bell and you are right: it’s the Barcelona branch of the Maoz Falafel European chain. You’ll find here quick and delicious street food: a Middle Eastern salad bar, pitta bread, falafel and fried potato wedges. There’s not a lot of space to seat: just two tall counters with a handful of stools – you might have to eat on the street.
LOCATION: Gothic Quarter, not far from La Rambla.

Krishna Lunch Room
If you’ve been following this post for a while, you have probably noticed that I like to include some quirky options in my recommendations from time to time. And this one is one that you won’t see recommended in other blogs because it’s kind of a secret. The Barcelona Krishna community has an eatery open to anyone during lunchtime, and their entire menu is vegetarian. You’ll find here a salad buffet, veggie patties, a few warm veggie dishes, and home made bread and dessert. It’s simple, it’s cheap, but it’s… unique. It’s not even marked on the street: you’ll have to ring on the intercom and go up the stairs. What an adventure! (and no, they won’t try to recruit you)
LOCATION: Gothic Quarter, in an alley behind Plaça Reial.

Amaltea
Open since 1998, this is another classic of the Barcelona vegetarian restaurants. Located in an area with lots of offices, they offer a very affordable and interesting daily menu during lunchtime on week days. During the weekends and at night they upgrade their formula to more elaborated dishes, still decently priced compared to what you can expect in the area. Their food is an attractive mix of Indian, Middle-Eastern, Italian, Mexican and Spanish recipes. They also organize meditation workshops.
LOCATION: Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample.

Fat Veggies
A place where vegetables become the star of the menu, where even the mains are clearly identifiable seasonable veggies, and the protein is reduced to beans served as starters. When they say “Eat your Veggies”, they really mean it! They have a tasting menu available, a well chosen wine list and specialty coffee.

Faire Tapas & Wine
If you’ve been looking for a place to try gourmet vegetarian tapas, look no more! At Faire you’ll find a satisfying selection of cold dips, warm tapas, and if you are still hungry, a short selection of international dishes. Their cooking has Asian and Italian influences, that mix nicely with their Spanish tapas selection. And you won’t need to go somewhere else for dessert: their raspberry friands look like they were made at the kitchen of a 5-star hotel! All their wines are organic natural wines, and they also have cocktails and sangria. And they also own a brunch place nearby called Faire Brunch & Drinks.

You’ll find here yummy bowls, toasts, pancakes and salads, as well as a specialty coffee station and a creative selection of lattes.
