Barcelona in the Summer is hot. It’s always a good idea to book a hotel with a pool to freshen up after your daily sightseeing. Or to reserve some time to relax at the Barcelona beaches. But if you have time and want something even more fun… what about spending a day at the water park? There’s many awesome water parks in Catalonia, some of them even reachable by public transportation – but for the others you’ll have to rent a car. Illa Fantasia

The closest water park to Barcelona is a great option for a fun and wet day. You'll find there a large variety of slides, a large wave pool (2000sqm / 0.5 acre), 1 floatie slide, several kids areas, and one extreme fall slide. This park is ideal for families and people looking for some exciting rides but that won't need many adrenaline highs. It's also perfect if you are staying in Barcelona and don't have your own car, because it's quite easy to get there by public transportation. It does get crowded for that reason, though.

WHEN IT’S OPEN: From the second week of June to the first week of September
OPENING HOURS: Mon-Sun, from 10AM to 6PM
LOCATION: Vilassar de Dalt (23.5km / 14.6mi from Barcelona)
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: 804 and 805 buses (25 minutes, they drop you 6 minutes walk from the park). R1 and RG1 suburban trains to Premià de Mar (33 minutes), then free shuttle from the station. The free bus from Barcelona is not available this season.
SURFACE: 70.000sqm / 18 acres

Marineland Cataluña

A perfect family day, that will include not just water slides but also the possibility of attending dolphin and sea lion shows, watching the seals and visiting a butterfly garden. The water park area includes a wave pool, one kids area, one adrenaline ride consisting on a 15m / 50ft high half pipe rode on a floatie, 3 more floatie slides (one on a black pipe, another on a centrifugal force funnel, and many more slides for everyone!

Aqualeon

A nice water park great for families with children and teens. There's 4 rides that they consider "adrenaline" rides but in other Barcelona water parks would probably be considered normal ones (one of them on a floatie). Then there's 3 more floatie slides, one zig-zag slide on a mat, two kids areas and a beach lagoon. There's a lot of green space, but due to the draught or on dry Summers it tends to be sort of dry...

OPENING HOURS: Mon-Sun, from 10.30AM to 6PM (June and the first 2 weeks of July, and last week of August only 11AM to 6PM)

Aquopolis

One of the largest water parks near Barcelona, it's divided in 6 different areas plus a VIP zone. There's 5 adrenaline rides, one of them a black hole, another a half pipe and one where you glide over the water on a specially designed board. There's also a wave pool and a sand beach, a floatie rapid river and an entire kids area. The only downside (besides being too difficult to reach from Barcelona by public transportation) is that their weight and height policies are quite complex.

OPENING HOURS: Mon-Sun, from 11AM to 7PM (June, first week of July and September only 11.30AM to 6PM)
LOCATION: La Pineda – Salou (112km / 70mi from Barcelona)

Port Aventura Costa Caribe

Port Aventura World is a resort including a the Port Aventura theme park, Ferrari Land and the Costa Caribe water park. There's two adrenaline rides, one of them a free fall and the other a 100m / 330ft speed slide. There's also a raft rapid river, a wave pool and several kids areas (one of them indoors). So despite being one of the smallest water parks in Catalunya, the number of rides is large compared to other parks where they favor green and rest areas.

WHEN IT’S OPEN: From end of May to the first weekend of September (some rides might still be closed during the first weeks of the season).
OPENING HOURS: Mon-Sun, from 11AM to 6PM
LOCATION: La Pineda – Salou (109km / 68mi from Barcelona)

A day in the largest water park in Barcelona is a day full of fun. You'll find here 5 adrenaline rides (two of them on a double raft, another ending with a centrifugal funne. There's two more raft rides, a wave pool, and 6 rides for the youngest kiddos. There's also a VIP area accessible by paying an additional fee, with Balinese beds, and the VIP ticket also includes a complimentary bottle of sparkling, a bag of candy and courtesy sunbeds in other ares of the water park.

The smallest brother of Waterworld Lloret is located in the more local and well-off town Platja d'Aro. This is a great place for families with young kiddos, featuring up to 8 rides specifically designed for them. There's also 3 adrenaline rides (one on a floatie, another a free fall slide), two more floatie slides, one multi-slide rode on mats and a wave pool. There's also a VIP area with premium areas and chillout villas.

Aquabrava

Despite being one of the smallest water parks in Barcelona, the space is so well organized that it concentrates one of the largest amount of rides. You'll find here one Xtreme Zone for people over 16yo, 5 adrenaline rides (one a raft half-pipe and two dark holes), a wave pool, a rock-climbing wall over a pool, 5 more floatie slides of different speeds, and two kids areas. There's also a drink pool bar with stools on the water. Too bad it's the furthest water park from Barcelona!

Tips to visit the best water parks in Barcelona

  • Make sure to pack water proof sunscreen
  • Bring flip-flops: the concrete paths and the artificial grass areas might be really hot in the Summer
  • Get tickets in advance to avoid long lines at the entrance
  • Use the lockers to keep your belongings safe
  • Double check the opening hours for the exact date you’ll be visiting (it might change depending on the season or day of the week)
  • Plan for buffer travel time to get there: if you get lost, miss the bus or train or are somehow delayed, you’ll be glad to have planned ahead
  • Double check at what time is the last train/bus back, if you are using public transportation: you don’t want to get stuck there!

No! Tibidabo is a theme park. It does have a splash ride (Mina d’Or) and its kids version (Alaska), plus a small water playground where small kids can put on their swimwear and play with water jets. But the rest of the rides are nothing to do with water.

What about Caldea?

Caldea is not a water park but rather a giant spa. It is located in Andorra, a tiny independent country between Spain and France, up in the Pyrenees. There’s many pools (one with a transparent bottom and views over the river), water jets, water falls and many jacuzzis.
