Guide to the best wineries in Barcelona

WHICH ARE THE BEST VINEYARDS NEAR BARCELONA?

Did you know that the cava wineries in Barcelona are some of the best wineries in Spain? Yes! Because not all the Spanish wine is Rioja wine! There’s much more to discover and taste, and you don’t need to go too far from the city to experience it. There’s at least 3 wine country regions that you need to hear about: Penedes, Alella and Pla del Bages. Penedes, less than one hour drive from Barcelona, is probably the most famous one, being the craddle of “Cava”, the Spanish sparkling wine made following the French méthode champenois used for champagne. But the area has also beautiful still wines, mostly whites but those wineries that go for reds to exceptional ones.

Alella is actually the closest wine denomination near Barcelona, you can get to any of its wineries in 20 to 30 minutes drive. And while historically it was devoted to young whites, they are surprising us lately with award winning sparklings as well. Then Pla del Bages is the wine country beyond the Montserrat Mountain. More off the beaten path and just over one hour drive from Barcelona, it’s an area full of history worth discovering. I’ve only added one example of them in this list, enough to pick your curiosity.

Now a few more things before we get hands on on the subject. When choosing the right winery for you there’s a few things to take into account. Most cava wineries require private transportation (or to take a private wine tour) to get there, but a few ones are located close enough to larger towns where you can use public transportation to get there. But most of the time, the ones in urban areas won’t have the vineyards around them and their venue might be less scenic. Most wineries are nowadays organic, but not all of them. And only a few run wine bars, which are the fastest way to visit a winery, compared to taking a full tour of the venue (which can take 1 to 2 hours). We discuss all this points in today’s post!

Codorniu

The second largest producer of cava in Spain is also one of the oldest companies in Spain, as well: the Codormiu – Raventós family is documented to have produced wine since 1659. Then in 1872 they were the first to produce sparkling in this country. Their cellar was built in modernist style in the early 1900’s by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, a competitor of Antoni Gaudí, and the arches that give access to the oldest cellar are now used as the reception area for visitors.

Albet i Noya were the pioneers of organic wine in Catalonia. In 1978 a group of Danish investors arrived to the Penedes wine region asking for organic producers when nobody was doing that yet. Not using chemicals sounded crazy! So somebody thought that the owner of Albet i Noya would be interested, since he was a vegetarian and back in thosee days that was seen as an extravagance in Spain. It was funily a perfect match!

Gramona

Josep Batlle, ancestor of the current owners of Gramona, was already working in wine making in 1850, and in 1881 his son founded his own winery, Celler Batlle. But it'd be his daughter Pilar who married Bartomeu Gramona, and their kids started Gramona with the goal of creating long-aging sparkling wines. Their original cellar, where they still elaborate some of their premium sparklings, is located in the center of the town.

Instead, their new cellar inaugurated in 2002 is located in the outskirts and equipped with state of the art sustainable technologies. Gramona was also one of the founders of the new Corpinnat quality label that was born to take cava to new levels of quality, sustainability and commitment with the land and its farmers. While it is possible to visit their modern facilities, we recommend to visit the historical cellar, which has much more charm. The modern cellar is best for people that are more into the wine making process than the history of the place (and who have their own means of transportation).

ADDRESS: Carrer de la Indústria, 36, 08770 Sant Sadurní d’Anoia
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: It’s a 7 minute walk from the Hillsa stop in the town center (Ca l’Arseni bakery), or 20 minutes from the train station.

TYPE OF VENUE: The historical cellar is a regular village house with a spectacular underground cellar, the modern facilities feel more like a factory.
IS IT BY THE VINEYARDS? Only the modern facilities.

Also a founder member of Corpinnat, their location by the hill offers beautiful views over the Penedes valley and the Montserrat mountains in the distance.

Jean Leon

Angel Ceferino Carrion was a poor boy from the North of Spain that emigrated to the USA in 1949. He lived a tourtuous life changing names to avoid being arrested, running away to scape military obligations and finally working in exclusive Hollywood restaurants where he met Sinatra, James Dean and Grace Kelly. And with James Dean he partnered to found a restaurant together. Unfortunately the actor died in accident before they were able to start it, but a few months later Mr. Carrion, now legally known as Jean Leon, inaugurated La Scala in Beverly Hills, which he run for over 30 years.

In 1962, while traveling in Italy, he managed to located one of his sisters and reconnect with this family, who thought him dead after so many years of no contact. He travels to Barcelona to visit them, and decides to purchase vineyards in Penedes to grow the excellent wines he needed for La Scala. He got rid of the local vines and planted French varieties known in the area so far. His first bottles were ready in 1971. And Alta Alella is a winery started by a couple of wine professionals, where their two daughters are taking the project to new levels. They've won for two years in a row the award to the best Cava in Spain (they can't be Corpinnat because they aren't located in the Penedes area!). Finca Ca n'Estella - Rabetllats

This hidden gem is located in a strange place: right behind the large car factory in Catalonia. But they are rebels: they are proud to have been there before the factory was built, and they are here to vindicate the landscape and the land. Right in the edge of the Penedes wine region, they are also the smallest winery with the most awards in the area. But despite their location: the state is surrounded by whitewashed walls and it faces the vineyards and the pine woods.

As soon as you enter the winery, you forget about its industrial neighbors and are immediately enchanted by the Mediterranean vibe of the place.

He was a pioneer of brut nature in the area, and after 1955 the winery specialized in long aging and manual disgorging. In 2006 the third generation of the family started the transformation of Recaredo into a pioneer of biodynamic agriculture in the Penedes wine country. The first vineyards around the farmhouse where Parés Baltà is located were planted in the late 1700’s. They brought experimentation and new ideas, while their husbands Joan and Josep take care of their vineyards following organic and biodynamic principles.

Cava Bertha

Pep and Gemma, the couple that founded Bertha, started their project in the village of Sant Sadurní, until they were able to move to a new cellar surrounded by vineyards in 2014. They are passionate about cava and their passion and personality are as bubbly as their sparkling wines. Emotion, terroir and quality define what they do, and one example of that is their defense of a local variety of grapes, Xarel·lo Vermell, that they use to make a wine that serves to rise money for breast cancer research.

Alella Vinicola - Bodega Marfil

In 1906 was founded a farming cooperative with some 50 partners who were to provide grapes to produce white wine. The cellar was built the next year by Jeroni Martorell, a student of Antoni Gaudi, and 1910 the first bottles entered the market. The winery is located in the heart of the village of Alella, while its vineyards are spread around the nearby valleys and hills. Nowadays a family-owned company, they continue to be a referent of the D.O. Alella soul and its star grape, the Pansa Blanca. Can Calopa - L'Olivera

Did you know there's a winery not near Barcelona, but within the Barcelona city limits? I'm kidding you not! In the mid 1800's the city started expanding beyond its medieval walls, first occupying the fields around it with the new Eixample district, then absorbing the villages around, many of them of a rural origin. That's how in some of those neighborhoods you can see farmhouse buildings surrounded by city...

And then the Barcelona continued to grow up the Collserola Hills and beyond. It’s there where the historical farmhouse of Can Calopa de Dalt has become the one and only Barcelona winery. Since 2010 the cellar is run by L’Olivera, a social cooperative that uses farming as a way to integrate people with difficulties and providing them with job opportunities. Their wines are unpretentious, but do show a commitment with the local territory. Their Barcelona vineyards produce mostly young wines, but there’s also some space for some experimenting and longer aging.

Heretat Montrubí

This winery started out as the village’s cooperative, where they made wine and oil that was exported to Cuba in the late 1700’s. During the XXth century the cellar was abandoned, but the vineyards continued to be taken care of by the tenant farmers until in 1984 the Peris family purchased the property and started producing cava there. In the early 2000, they decided to turn the local grape variety Sumoll into their hallmark. The company grew and in 2018 they modernized their premises. After 2020 they entered the hospitality business, first with a restaurant and wine bar, then with a boutique hotel.
