CAVA WINE BRANDS FOR A PERFECT MEDITERRANEAN MEAL
Penedes Cava is the most famous sparkling drink in Catalonia; only the wines that are fermented with champenoise tradicional method and inside permited areas (Denominación de Origen) can be labelled as Spanish Cava. Although there are Cava regions all over Spain, the 95% of all cava is produced in the Penedès wine region in Catalonia (40km from Barcelona), and most of it it’s Sant Sadurni d’Anoia Cava (the village with most cava cellars in the area).
In a near past, Cava was often consumed only at celebrations like baptisms, dinners, parties or marriages and only during dessert. But little by little it has become a drink for all occasions. Nowadays, locals drink Penedes Cava during meals as if it was wine, and you can even order a glass of Cava in most bars and restaurants!
That’s why today we are recommending you a few Cavas to get introduced to the Cava world : well known Cavas easy to find in most bars and restaurants.
These are our favorite Barcelona cava brands (mostly Sant Sadurni d’Anoia cava):
1
Anna de Codorniu
Anna was the Codorniu heiress who married the viticulturist Miquel Raventós in 1659. Since then, Raventós Family has owned Codorniu and retained the Anna name as a world-renowned brand. It has become Codorniu’s most emblematic cava due to its history, quality and versatility.
Plus it was the first Cava to incorporate Chardonnay in its coupage which gives it delicate aromas and an unmistakable freshness that come together with a unique character. Well balanced and refreshing on the palate. Although cava matches with all kinds of food, this one is perfect for aperitif, shellfish, white fish, sushi and sashimi or lightly spiced carpaccio.
2
Llopart Reserva Brut Nature
Its Reserva Brut Nature is a great classic among all Reserva Cavas, it’s fine and light in mouth and completely dry and soft. Very versatile, ideal to have it alone or to accompany any dish. If you have the opportunity though, we would recommend as well the Brut Nature Integral, as well as its Gran Reserva Leopardi.
3
Gramona Imperial
The Gramona Imperial with 3-4 year of aging has become a classic among its faithful public. Enjoy it while having lunch or dinning, even with dessert. It won’t disappoint you!
4
Agustí Torelló Mata Reserva Brut
Recommended at any time of the day, alone, as an aperitif, with fish, white meat and desserts. Don’t hesitate either to taste their Gran Reserva Brut Nature, and the winery jewel: Kripta.
5
Recaredo Reserva Particular
Moreover, they only practice dry, organic and biodynamic agriculture and harvested completely by hand.
This Gran Reserva Brut Nature has been aged for 6.5 years and the result is a light and smooth wine with thin bubbles. Citrus fruit prevail in a very lively and fresh mouth which is at the same time serious and structure. By the way, this is one of our favorite cellars to visit in our Barcelona Cava tour!
AND BONUS! The favorite Cava of the Spanish Royalty
6
Juvé y Camps Reserva de la Família
This is the preferred Spanish Cava of the Spain’s royal family. Reserva la Família is his flagship product, and it’s the only Brut Nature among all their Cavas.
