WHERE TO STAY IN MONTSERRAT

The mountain of Montserrat, with its splendid benedictin monastery, is one of the favorite destinations for a day trip from Barcelona (Spain). It is located a mere 60km / 37mi away from the city, and it can be easily reached not just by car but also by public transportation. And while one can be done with the visit in a few hours, there’s many reasons to consider staying overnight. What better than to escape the morning crowds that disappear after lunch and have the entire monastery area to yourself? No lines to get to the Montserrat Madonna shrine, no lines to get on the funiculars, no lines to pay at the gift shops and cafeterias… And time to chat with the farmers about their handmade cheese without being interrupted by hurried tourists.

When the sun sets, Montserrat becomes quiet and the special light of the dusk brings back the spirituality that felt lost during daytime. Then at 7PM you can join the monks for their evening prayer and hear the Boys Choir joining them. It feels so different when it’s almost dark inside the Basilica and there’s so little people on it… But if you aren’t looking for a spiritual experience but love mountain sports, staying in the monastery will be the way to explore the mountain in depth: its many hiking paths, its via ferratas and climbing routes… Or you may want to make it a unique base to explore the mountain surrounding and the local heritage off the beaten path. Whatever is your goal, we’ve gathered all the available options for you!

Staying by the Basilica: Montserrat Monastery Hotels

1

Hotel Abat Cisneros ***

Did you know there’s a hotel in the Montserrat Monastery? The Abat Cisneros is a 3-star hotel that already in 1563 was used to host the pilgrims that visited the monastery. The current building dates back from the 1950’s, but its facilities have been modernized. They have single and double rooms, as well as communicated rooms for families. Most of them have mountain views, and 4 of them are premium rooms with a living room area.

The hotel has a restaurant and a cafe, where you’ll be able to eat your meals. And guests will be given a complimentary ticket for the rack train for each day of your stay, as well as a discount booklet. If you are arriving by car, we recommend to park at the bottom station of the rack train (Monistrol Vila) and take the train up.

Cel·les Abat Marcet

Hotel Abat Cisneros in the Montserrat Monastery

In the 1960's the monastery accommodation facilities for pilgrims had become insuficient, and a new building has built to increase their capacity. What started being simple cells with a bed, a table, a chair and little more, has evolved into simple but modern and eco-friendly apartments with TV and phone, heating, private bath and a fully equipped kitchenette. The apartments have room for 1 to 4 people. Guests also receive free rack-train tickets for their entire stay.

3

Alberg Abat Oliva

Backpackers, budget travelers and large groups have a more affordable option in Montserrat: their youth hostel located across the street from the Abat Marcet apartments features bunk bed rooms for 4, 6, 8 and 10 people that can be either shared (mixed or girls-only) or private, as well as family rooms with kitchenette for 4 to 8 people. There’s a groups dinning room, a common kitchen, free wifi and bike parking. This accommodation doesn’t come with free rack-train tickets.

Area Deportiva i Acampada de Montserrat

Would you rather be in close contact with nature? Do you travel with your own tent? In that case you’ll be thrilled to know that there’s a camping area very close to the monastery! You won’t be able to get there by car, though, so you rather pack light as it’s located some 7 minutes walk (400m / 0.25mi) away from the Monastery area, following the path to the Cross of St. Miquel. Not very far, really, but it’s kind of uphill.

This camping area is only open during the summer months and it can’t be reserved online: you must call +34 938 77 77 77 to book. The parking plots are small (just for tents) and the facilities are very simple: clean toilets and a shed with a communal table. Not really a place to vacation, but a cheap option for rock-climbers, hikers, boy scout groups and the like.

Monastery Hostelries

Is it possible to stay in the actual monastery, where the monks live? That depends… if your goal is to explore the mountain, hike or do some sightseeing, the answer is no. But if you are looking for an opportunity to do inner work and meditation, and you are happy to stick to certain schedules and food rules, then the monks community runs a hostelry where you’ll be able to find a space for silence, prayer and peace. They also organize voluntary service for young adults aged 18 to 35yo. Find more information here >>

Similarly, the nuns at the nearby Monastery of Sant Benet also run their own guest house for groups and individuals looking to share the spaces and slow life of their community. More information here >>

Other Montserrat hotels

MONISTROL DE MONTSERRAT

If the options at the Monastery don't match your needs, you'll have to find a place to stay in one of the nearby villages. Monistrol is probably the most convenient if you don't have your own car or a rental one, because it's the one accessible by train from Barcelona, and the rack train to the Monastery departs from there as well. And if you are driving, it's only a short 10min drive via a scenic winding road.

Monistrol de Montserrat is a small village of about 3000 inhabitants that has been linked to the history of the monastery from the Middle Ages, and it keeps a small old town that has a certain charm. You’ll also find there several mid-range restaurants.

6

Hostal Guilleumes **

The only hotel in Monistrol is a modest family-run 2-star hotel, located in the edge of the village, some 15 minutes walk from the train station. Nothing fancy, but it’s a pet-friendly hotel and they’ll open their grill restaurant for dinners on request.

7

Casa Camí de les Aigües

This guest house is a lovely old building restored by an enthusiastic young couple of entrepreneurs. The house, with garden and an arched balcony features two floors, each of them with shared kitchen and bathroom. It is located some 13 minutes walk from the train station.

Short term rentals

Your other alternative in Monistrol de Montserrat are short term rentals. The offer is nice and it includes both houses and apartments, most of them inside the village but some of them in the suburbs or the nearby countryside area. You’ll find options for groups up to 6 people for a variety of budgets.

*NOTE. When I indicate the number of children, it’s because they’ll be sleeping in a sofa bed – which wouldn’t be comfortable enough for adults.

EL BRUC

El Bruc is a village in the opposite side of the mountain, sunnier than Monistrol because it's not located in the river valley, but at the foot of Montserrat where the plane starts. Smaller than Monistrol (some 2300 inhabitants), the road to the monastery is less winding but equally scenic - easier to drive and often with less traffic than the one from Monistrol, the drive takes roughly 20 minutes. El Bruc has also a medieval area and it feels somewhat better kept.

9

Hotel El Bruc ***

This hotel close to the highway but facing the mountain is a classic in the area, often used by locals to celebrate weddings and other family celebrations, but also by companies organizing business meetings and events. On Friday and Saturday there’s a dance club at night, and on Sundays there’s a kids club during lunchtime. Their outdoor pool is open during the Summer season. The only downside is that it’s away from the village, so you’ll need your car for everything.

10

Hotel Masia Can Farrés ***

For a more romantic stay, Can Farres is a gorgeous masia (Catalan farmhouse) that has been beautifully restored. It preserves some architectural elements from the 1400’s and the interior decoration is a tasteful blend of rustic and modern-chic design. They make their own olive oil and organize oil tastings. There’s also a small plunge pool in the gardens.

Also, compared to Monistrol, the offer of apartaments is nil but there’s many gorgeous houses in the area perfect for larger groups of friends or multi-generational families.

COLLBATÓ

Collbató is the other village in this side of the mountain, famous for a stalactites cave that can be visited in the area. A bit larger than El Bruc, it features almost 5000 inhabitants. It's only 5 minutes further from the monastery than El Bruc, 10 minutes if you decide to go via the Monistrol road.

12

Checkin Montserrat ***

Checkin Montserrat is a 3 star hotel located in a residential district of Collbató and with breathtaking views over the Montserrat Mountain. Decorated with a modern design with touches of Mediterranean color, it features not just an outdoor pool but also a gym, a sports court and a game room with pool and football tables.

13

Hostal Can Misse ***

If you prefer to be in the middle of the village so you can walk around it and explore its alleys and try its restaurants, Hostal Can Misse is one of our favorite hotels near Montserrat. This historical house that been restored and adapted to hotel uses keeping all its charm. The decoration is rustic with romantic touches, and the hotel features an outdoor pool.

FAQ

Is there any 5 star hotel in Montserrat?

The closest luxury hotel is Can Bonastre Wine Resort (5 stars), 45 minutes drive from the Montserrat Monastery (30km / 18.5mi). Alternatively, you may want to check Mon Sant Benet (4 stars superior), which is the same distance but a 10 minutes faster drive.

Are there RV parkings in Montserrat?

Yes, you can either park in the monastery parking and pay for the full day fee, or use the Campers Area in Monistrol, which is equipped and free of charge. There’s also two more free parkings (Can Jorba in El Bruc and the one in the Santa Cecilia monastery), but they have no services.
