NEWLY OPEN HOTELS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR NEXT TRIP
We’ve been blogging for 4 years already, and we have posted a lot of information about hotels in town. But this last year there has been a few really interesting openings: new hotels that are certainly going to be strong competition for the top 5-star and boutique hotels in Barcelona. Some of them with quite exciting features and locations.
And since they are relatively new, it’s not easy to find much information about them in guidebooks and large sites so far, what might make you disregard them if you happen to hit a special deal for staying in them. And that would be such a mistake… So today I want to talk about our favorite ones, and you might want to check them out for your next trip. Let get a hotel industry overview and check what’s new in town!
These are our favorite recently open hotels in Barcelona:
5 stars. This hotel is located by the Port Vell marina, walking distance from la Rambla, the historical area of the Gothic Quarter, the Born district (Picasso Museum, shopping and restaurants) as well as the Barceloneta fishermen district, and it’s well connected by subway with Passeig de Gràcia.
A completely renovated building where it seems like a very young Picasso had his very first studio when he was only 15 years old. We absolutely love the rooftop overlooking the marina, with pool and bar.
They have also designed the hotel with the goal of welcoming families and treating their guests in a very personable way – they even assign you a member of their Attention to the Guest staff to take care of you during your stay. The downside: it lacks of gym or spa. Book it here.
5 stars. The second Ohla in Barcelona (the first one is in Via Laietana, near the Gothic Quarter) is located close to the Emma, but slightly more centrally. A boutique hotel that you can’t miss: its façade is entirely covered in a spectacular tile mosaic inspired in Beethoven’s 4 Seasons.
On Thursdays in the summertime there are live music and DJ sessions at their rooftop bar, so you can enjoy creative cocktails and watch the sunset by the pool, that buy the way is one of the few heated outdoor pools in town.
Design lovers will be thrilled by the accurate decoration of the hotel common areas, and foodies will be delighted and surprised by the offer of their Xerta restaurant, specializing in the cuisine from the Ebro river, the longest in Spain that ends just 3 hours away from Barcelona: their specialties include the delicate angula baby eels and a variety of rices that will show you there is life beyond paella. Check their website before booking, as they often have discount promo codes available and other great deals. Book it here.
5 stars. Located in the busy Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, it’s very close to the Gaudi buildings in Passeig de Gràcia, with its elegant shopping and many food options, and not such a long walk from the Born district, the Gothic Quarter and La Rambla. It’s an elegant boutique hotel with a colonial design that reminds you of the history of the building, which had been the headquarters of the Textile Cotton Foundation.
They have a gym, a little spa and rooftop bar with a small pool, and rooms are cleaned twice a day. We love the opportunity they offer you to have a shirt tailor-made for you during your stay, as a tribute to the past of the hotel. Book it here.
4 star superior. The second Princess hotel has opened in the very heart of Barcelona, just a couple of blocks from Plaça Catalunya (a very similar location to the Cotton House, just one inch more central). The other Princess is a 5-star, but the location is way too far from everything, in the Forum area – not convenient at all for sightseeing, so the Negresco is a great alternative to it.
Enjoy breakfast until noon, have a Barcelona vermouth at noon at their bar on the street level, or a lovely drink or coffee anytime from their rooftop terrace with pool, with spectacular views over the city and live DJ in the summer nights. They have an environmental policy that shows their commitment with leading a sustainable business. Book it here.
3 stars. Room Mate is a Barcelona hotel chain that started with the trendy Pau next to Plaça Catalunya and now is present in 11 more exciting cities around the world. Emma is their newest opening in Barcelona, and it’s located in an area of Eixample off the beaten path but walking distance from the sites, shops and restaurants of Passeig de Gràcia. The decoration is very cool and kind of futuristic, very in the line of what the modern Barcelona style is. So unlike any other 3-star hotel you’ve been to.
They might not have fancy gyms, spas or rooftop terraces, but they have the design, warmth and amenities you need for a comfortable and fun stay. Free wifi and breakfast until noon are available for all guests, and for an extra touch of luxury get one of their penthouse suites with private terrace and even a pool. Book it here.
AND BONUS! The newest Grand Luxe opening in Barcelona is…
5-star GL. The classic Condes de Barcelona hotel used to be split in two buildings, one across the street from the other, what made it a bit confusing. So the owners decided to turn them into two completely separate hotels, and while the original Condes de Barcelona has remained in its original location, the other building across the street has now become the Monument Hotel, which takes advantage of its modernist architecture that is altogether combined with stylish contemporary decoration.
The location in Passeig de Gràcia, right between Casa Mila (Pedrera) and Casa Batlló, both Gaudi masterpieces, is hard to beat, as it’s its restaurant offer, managed by the prestigious Basque chef Martin Berasategui, a close friend of the hotel owners. If you appreciate beauty, you’ll be astonished at the compositions of their flower atelier, decorating every corner of the hotel. Book it here.
