Description:

As only to be expected from an accomplished orientalist painter, Fortuny’s great interest in Moslem customs led him to depict one of the most characteristic aspects of Islam: people praying at the mosque. Like most painters of his time, he managed to combine personal experience with his own imagination, and in this sense his source of inspiration for the architectural setting here is the Church of Santa María la Blanca in Toledo. Executed during his Granada period, the date of this sketch coincides with that of The Alhambra Tribunal, an orientalist painting by the artist from Reus which may also be contemplated at the Teatre-Museu Daló in Figueres (Spain).
