Cava Brands from Penedès that never fail | ForeverBarcelona

Sant Sadurni d'Anoia Cava: Rosé

Penedes Cava is the most famous sparkling drink in Catalonia; only the wines that are fermented with champenoise tradicional method and inside permited areas (Denominación de Origen) can be labelled as Spanish Cava. Although there are Cava regions all over Spain, the 95% of all cava is produced in the Penedès wine region in Catalonia (40km from Barcelona), and most of it it’s Sant Sadurni d’Anoia Cava (the village with most cava cellars in the area).

In a near past, Cava was often consumed only at celebrations like baptisms, dinners, parties or marriages and only during dessert. But little by little it has become a drink for all occasions. Nowadays, locals drink Penedes Cava during meals as if it was wine, and you can even order a glass of Cava in most bars and restaurants!

If you have never tasted Cava, we encourage you to do it!

That’s why today we are recommending you a few Cavas to get introduced to the Cava world : they are all well known Cavas easy to find in most bars and restaurants.

Here is our favorite catalan (mostly Sant Sadurni d’Anoia) cava list:

Anna de Codorniu

Anna was the Codorniu heiress who married the viticulturist Miquel Raventós in 1659. Since then, Raventós Family has owned Codorniu and retained the Anna name as a world-renowned brand. It has become Codorniu’s most emblematic cava due to its history, quality and versatility. Plus it was the first Cava to incorporate Chardonnay in its coupage which gives it delicate aromas and an unmistakable freshness that come together with a unique character.  Well balanced and refreshing on the palate. Although cava matches with all kinds of food, this one is perfect for aperitif, shellfish, white fish, sushi and sashimi or lightly spiced carpaccio.

Llopart Reserva Brut Nature

Penedes Cava

The first bottle of Llopart was made in 1887. Since then the Llopart family has dedicated all their efforts to cultivate the best vines to elaborate a high quality “craft” Caves. Its Cavas are the expression of a land and vine essence, which still remains the very goal of their family. Its Reserva Brut Nature is a great classic among all Reserva Cavas, it’s fine and light in mouth and completely dry and soft. Very versatile, ideal to have it alone or to accompany any dish. If you have the oportunity though, we would recommend as well the Brut Nature Integral, as well as its Gran Reserva Leopardi

Gramona Imperial

Behind a great product there’s a great longstanding family tradition. Its strong identity and roots combine with the desire and passion to innovate and bring new sensations and emotions to each bottle. The Gramona Imperial with 3-4 year of aging has become a classic among its faithful public. Enjoy it while having lunch or dinning, even with dessert. It won’t disappoint you!

Agustí Torelló Mata Reserva Brut

Their Cava has a unique personality developed through excellence respecting their land, local varieties, soil, climate, process and traditions. This Reserva Brut transmits all the winery soul and personality. Elegant and balanced, very well-integrated bubbles. Long and delicate aftertaste. Recommended at any time of the day, alone, as an aperitif, with fish, white meat and desserts. Don’t hesitate either to taste their Gran Reserva Brut Nature, and the winery jewel: Kripta

Spanish CavaRecaredo Gran Reserva Brut Nature

If you like old cavas, Recaredo should be your choice. All its products are aged form 30 months to more than 10 years on the lees. Moreover, they only practice dry, organic and biodynamic agriculture and harvested completely by hand. This Gran Reserva Brut Nature  has been aged for 54 months and the result is a light and smooth wine with thin bubbles. Citrus fruit prevail in a very lively and fresh mouth which is at the same time serious and structure. By the way, this is one of our favorite cellars to visit in our Spanish Cava tour!

AND BONUS! The favorite Cava of the Spanish Royalty

6Juvé y Camps Reserva de la Família

Juvé y Camps has been a family company for three generations that has garnered an international reputation. All started about 200 years ago with Joan Juvé Mir, a vine grower with ideas ahead of his time. He laid the foundations of what would be in the future the Juvé y Camps winery. This is the preferred Spanish Cava of the Spain’s royal family. Reserva la Família is his flagship product, and it’s the only Brut Nature among all their Cavas.
