DAY TRIP TO THE COSTA BRAVA: A day in the wild coast

Would a day by the sea be the perfect plan for one of your days in Barcelona? Have you heard of the Costa Brava and are intrigued by its rocky beaches, cliffs and bays?

The Costa Brava is one of our favorite beach areas of Catalonia. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to reach on your own unless you have a car since the train doesn’t get there and taking the bus can be challenging.

But at ForeverBarcelona we don’t want you to miss the opportunity to explore this truly scenic area. Our guide and our driver will pick you up and take you up North, stopping at the most picturesque seaside villages. You can’t imagine a better day by the Mediterranean Sea!

Walk

BLANES

A huge rock in the middle of the Blanes bay marks the end of the sandy beaches between Blanes and Barcelona and the beginning of the rocky cliffs of la Costa Brava. The name of this rock is Sa Palomera, and you’ll want to climb it to enjoy the views from the vantage point at its top. Alternatively, you might chose to wander around the fresh produce market that has been celebrated in a boulevard along the promenade since the early 1900’s.

30 minutes
Drive

DRIVE TO TOSSA DE MAR

Back to the car, the road takes you past the busy Lloret de Mar and on to the winding roads across pine tree woods that take to Tossa de Mar, ocasionally spotting the Mediterranean sea.

TOSSA DE MAR

Tossa de Mar is an iconic seaside village that seduced Ava Gardner during the filming of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. A rocky hill towers in one end of the bay, protected by a line of old fortifications: the only medieval enclosure by the sea that can be seen in Spain.

Choose to either climb the hill to enjoy the views and walk around the cobblestone streets of the old town, or walk around its commercial street for some interesting local shopping, or enjoy a paella lunch by the sea, or just relax and have some beach time.

DRIVE BACK TO BARCELONA

Use the ride to discuss the day with your guide, continue asking questions and learning about the Costa Brava and Catalonia or getting ideas and tips for the rest of your stay, or just take a nap that helps digesting your paella lunch.

One in Barcelona you’ll be dropped off back to your location or other address of your choice, within the Barcelona limits.

If you have a whole day available for touring, want to go a bit more off the beaten path, or if budget is not an issue.

DRIVE TO CALELLA DE PALAFRUGELL

Back to the car, you’ll drive along an atmospheric countryside road around the Massís de Cadiretes on your way to Calella de Palafrugell (alternatively, the coastal road via Sant Feliu de Guixols offers a very spectacular views over the cliffs, but it’s not recommended if you are prone to get motion sickness and it takes some 15 minutes longer).

PALAFRUGELL

Palafrugell is a town that consists of smaller villages. Your first stop here will be Calella de Palafrugell. Not to be confused with the ugly Calella de la Costa near Barcelona, this traditional fishermen village is famous for its porched beach houses and old fashioned boats. The popular sailors songs called “habaneres” are often inspired in this town. It is now a favorite Summer destination for well-off Barcelona families.

A short 15 minutes drive will take you to our favorite bay in the area: a tiny beach surrounded by cliffs and pine trees that almost reach the sea water: Tamariu. This is a great spot for both beach time and lunch.

Time allowing, before heading back to Barcelona you can make another short detour to visit the Sant Sebastià lighthouse, the brightest of the whole Catalan coast, with outstanding views over the Mediterranean.

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU?

This tour works great for anyone that enjoys a day by the sea and wants a relaxing day without a lot of history or deep explanations but lots of beautiful landscapes and (maybe) some beach time. It works best in the warmer months (Easter through end of September).

If you are traveling with kids, this tour is very child-friendly. Let us know if you wish to have some beach time, so we can time your tour accordingly (and remember to bring your swimsuits and towels!).

If you have walking issues or use a wheelchair, most seaside villages are accessible – except that you won’t be able to climb the fortified hill in Tossa de Mar (but will still see it from the beach).

If you’d rather combine some history with your day by the sea, check our Girona and Costa Brava tour.

Our second day in Barcelona was spent with SANDRA, traveling by mini-bus up the Costa Brava region of Spain. Sandra was wonderful as well, with great English and a wonderful presentation of all of the little seaside towns, their history and other attractions we saw that day.

Our second tour was a tour of the Calella and Begur areas. Javier confessed this was not his expertise but took a recon trip in advance and, with the help of our driver Marco (a local) treated us to a great day exploring beautiful beach towns and spectacular walks along the coast, capped off with great lunch in Calella at Hotel Terramar. Javier was a delight. His warmth and friendliness charmed us all.
