Are you a total Gaudi fan? Have you heard of his other unfinished church and want to visit it? Would you also like to head to the mountains to check out his “other Park”, besides Park Guell?
Most people are not aware that Gaudi also worked outside of Barcelona. And even if they are, getting to his hidden gems requires mastering the public transportation or driving yourself. Does it sound like too much work?
If you still don’t want to miss the Gaudi sites off the beaten path, this tour will show you the church where he tested his catenarian arches theory before using it in his other masterpieces: the Crypta Güell. And then on to the mountains to walk around a river garden Gaudí built at the same time he was working on the famous Park Güell: the Artigas Garden.
Final itinerary and timings might vary due to many factors (season of the year, your location and pace, your main interests…)
Your tourguide and your driver pick you up at your hotel/apartment/cruise pier and drive to the Güell Colony..
In the industrial colony founded by the Count Güell, Gaudí started building a church for the workers of the factory, that was left unfinished. However, nowadays you can still visit its Crypt. Discover the secrets hidden in its symbolism and be admired by its innovative engineering solutions, such as how Gaudi started testing his catenarian arches here, that he’d use later on at the Sagrada Familia church. You’ll also learn about the hard daily lives of the industrial revolution working class.
This scenic ride will take you along the Llobregat river crossing the region of Catalonia all the way to the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains.
Hidden at the foot of the Pyrenees are the Artigas gardens, designed by Gaudí along a mountain river, in a time when he was also working at the Park Güell. He adapted his architecture to the landscape to create an oasis of calm and nature.
Enjoy a traditional Catalan lunch at some mountain restaurant. You’ll probably be the only foreigners there.
Use the drive back to continue asking your guide whatever you are curious about: Gaudi, the local culture and history, recommendations for the rest of your stay…
At the end of the tour you’ll be dropped back at your hotel or apartment, or other location of your choice within the city limits.
This tour is a great choice for Gaudi fans that have already visited his masterpieces and have an extra day to go out of town.
If you are traveling with kids, the drive might to the Artigas Gardens might be a bit too long for them. Consider going to Montserrat after the Colonia Güell instead.
If you have walking issues, please note there are irregular stairs in the Artigas Gardens and that they are not wheelchair friendly.
If you only have half a day, combine the Colonia Guell with Palau Guell instead.
