Best Hotels In Gothic Quarter of Barcelona

HOTELS IN BARRI GOTIC WE LOVE

The Barri Gotic hotels in the oldest part of Barcelona are full of undeniable charm… If you like narrow alleys and corners full of history, you might want to consider staying here!

Staying in El Barri Gotic (Barcelona) you’ll be walking distance from La Rambla, the Born district, the fishermen Barceloneta neighborhood and even the shops and Gaudi apartment buildings in Passeig de Gràcia.

The downside is that sometimes its backstreets are pedestrian areas or so narrow that taxis can’t really drop you in front of your hotel, then you’ll have to be ready to walk a  couple of blocks.

But if that doesn’t scare you, then the Barri Gotic hotels offer you the pleasure of silence and the charm of the medieval atmosphere.

Making sense of the different areas where are located the hotels in Gothic Quarter in Barcelona:

  • Heart of the Barri Gòtic: This is the most monumental area of the Gothic Quarter, where you can feel its medieval past best. It basically refers to the area surrounding the Cathedral.
  • Barri de Sant Just: It’s the district around the church of Sant Just i Pastor, still within the old Roman walls and with a quite historical feel. The alleys are difficult to navigate, but it’s less visited by tourists.
  • Barri de Santa Anna: The neighborhood between the Cathedral and Plaça Catalunya, around the Monastery of Santa Anna. The medieval feel is not as strong and the streets are busy with people shopping.
  • Barri del Pi: The zone between the Boqueria Market and the Jewish Section, around the church of Santa Maria del Pi. Medieval feel and fun shops, but with less crowds than Santa Anna.
  • Barri del Palau. The area between Plaça Reial and the Barri de Sant Just. Between medieval and 1800’s feel. Shops and bars that attract bohemian young adults.
  • Barri de la Mercè. Alleys around the Basilica de la Mercè, underneath the Barris del Palau and Sant Just. An unusual mix of authentic tapas bars with designer bistrots and shot bars.
  • Moll de la Fusta pier. The waterfront of the Barri de la Mercè: the hotels there face the marina while the Gothic Quarter expands at their back.
  • Via Laietana. A large avenue with lots of traffic separating the Gothic Quarter from the Born district. The top of it is the edge of Barri de Santa Anna, its center is near the Cathedral, and its bottom part is the edge of Barri de Sant Just and la Mercè.

Technically, I should have included here La Rambla, the limit between the Gothic Quarter and El Raval, but I decided against it because it has its own personality – very different from the rest of the Gothic Quarter. If you’d like to stay check out the section “Hotels near the Gothic Quarter” at the end of the post.

The hidden gem of the hotels in Barri Gotic (Barcelona, Spain). It is located inside a restored medieval mansion, in an alley that tourists haven’t discovered yet (although it’s only a couple of blocks from the Cathedral).

The room are sophisticated with a vintage touch. All their rooms have views over the interior patio. The Large, X-Large and Suite Rooms incorporate a lovely sitting area, the larger the bigger the room is. Only the Suites have a bathtub – the rest have showers. Book your room here.

A Relais Chateaux in the medieval Barcelona! A very romantic hotel, I L-O-V-E their rooftop terrace (open to non-guests as well for drinks in the evening).

Same down-side: some taxi drivers will refuse to drop you at the door, as the alley where it’s located is quite narrow… They can however get you close enough: just one block from it. Book your room here.

This mansion from the 1700’s has been accurately restored and transformed into a luxury boutique hotel that has quickly become a favorite among all of the hotels in Barri Gotic and now qualifies as a historic hotel.

Gorgeous rooms, some of them large enough for families or including a kitchenette where you can prepare your meals with the fresh produce you’ll buy in the nearby Boqueria Market. It’s accessible by taxi and located half way between La Rambla and the Cathedral, in an area offering plenty of unique shopping options. Book your room here.

9

H10 Madison

LOCATION: Central Via Laietana.

This hotel owned by a local chain won the 2021 Traveller’s Choice award of Tripadvisor as one of the 25 best hotels in Spain, and one of the best hotel rooftops in the world. I’m sort of surprised about the rooftop mention: it’s nice, but there’s similar ones in the district.

But it is true that the elegant old building where it is located and the classy decoration, united to a great services makes it a wonderful choice within its price range. The rooms feature a Nespresso coffee machine with daily refill, and the bathrooms have rain showers and amenities of the international brand Rituals.

10

H10 Cubik

LOCATION: Top of Via Laietana.

This hotel belongs to the same chain of the Madison and the services and in-room equipment are quite similar, but the Cubik is slightly cheaper. It also has a rooftop with bar and pool. And where the Madison has one restaurant that doubles as cocktail bar, the Cubik has two restaurants and one bar.

11

Duquesa de Cardona

LOCATION: Beside the Moll de la Fusta pier.

This boutique hotel occupies a building from the 1500’s that used to be the residence of the local nobility: the duchess of Cardona, after whom the hotel is named.

The decoration of the common areas of the hotel is classic and elegant, but the rooms are somewhat sober compared to other hotels in the Gothic Quarter (Barcelona, Spain) and smaller too. But it has one of the most coveted rooftop bars in the area, plus a restaurant and a cocktail bar.

Plus taxi drivers should be able to drop you at the door, no problem. Book your room here.

14

Hotel Colon

LOCATION: Heart of the Gothic Quarter.

Classic hotel with an old-fashioned Parisian touch, for those who like old-school venues. It’s located right in front of the Cathedral, somewhere accessible by taxi. BTW, don’t be put off by the hotel name: in Spanish it actually means “Columbus Hotel” (lol). Book your room here.

This hotel has been voted best hotel of Spain and best luxury hotel of Spain in Kayak – although that sounds a bit too much: it doesn’t have a rooftop pool! But the elegant decoration matches the colonial building where it is located, with an early 1900’s feel. And the wall windows in the rooms facing the street are espectacular!

 Book your room here.

17

Cool Rooms Maldà

LOCATION: Barri del Pi.

Stylish hotel inside a 1600’s mansion. They have no rooftop, restaurant or gym, but I love that they can arrange breakfast in an old grocery across the street – a really cool gourmet experience!

The rooms are small compared to other Barcelona hotels in Gothic Quarter, but the suites have a stand-alone bathtub in the bedroom (not the bathroom – it seems to be a trend, lately).

Affordable Gothic Quarter hotels (Barcelona, Spain)

As for the rest of the Gothic Quarter hotels in Barcelona, many of those with 3 stars and less are dated and lack of charm… I won’t spend a lot of time describing them because there’s not much to explain about them. But I’ve selected a few that are worth checking out:

  • Hotel Denit. Barri de Santa Anna. A 3-star hotel run by one of the top 5-star hotels in town. Affordable luxury.
  • HCC Montblanc. Top of Via Laietana. 3-star hotel with pool in the ground floor (summer only)
  • Catalonia Avinyó. Barri del Palau. 3-star hotel with rooftop pool and gym.
  • Hesperia Barri Gotic Hotel. Barri de la Mercè. Basic and minimalistic  but nice 3-stars.
  • Casa Lirio. Barri de la Mercè. Boutique 2-stars with private garden.

Hotels near the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona

The Old Town Barcelona is more than just the Gothic Quarter! If you couldn’t find a suitable place there, you’ll want to check these other areas:

  • BORN DISTRICT. With the medieval feel of the Gothic Quarter plus its unique trendy shops and restaurants, it makes a great alternative to hotels in Barri Gotic.
  • LA RAMBLA. The hotels on La Rambla, the famous busy and lively boulevard, are another great option near the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.
  • EL RAVAL. El Raval hotels can be an interesting choice for experienced travelers that don’t get scared easily and want to be off the beaten path.
