Are you into wine? Do you also love history and old stones? Would mixing up both things in one single day trip sound like the perfect day for you?
Come discover the Roman Ruins of Tarragona, declared World Heritage by the UNESCO, then visit a wine cellar in the Penedes area where over 90% of the production of Spanish sparkling is produced, enjoy a lovely wine tasting, and stay in the area for lunch.
A plan that would be hard to organize on your own, and that with your private tour guide and driver will be smooth, pleasant and educational – all at the same time. Plus you’ll stay away from the Barcelona crowds for one day, as we chose small family-owned cellars that only take small groups like yours, and Tarragona is never crowded.
Final itinerary and timings might vary due to many factors (traffic, your pace, your main interests, winery availability…)
your private tour guide and your driver will pick you up at your location in Barcelona city and take you to the historical town of Tarragona to explore its Roman and Medieval heritage.
If you wish, ask your guide to stop on the way at a Roman Stone Quarry or the Aqueduct for a few pics.
The warm Tarragona weather and its great location made the Romans choose this area to create a city that was often visited by Roman emperors, who left their imprint in the local architecture. In this stroll around its old town you’ll feel like being in Italy without the crowds, take backstreets off the beaten path and learn about the local history. You’ll see the Tarragona Cathedral, the ruins of the Forum, the city walls and you’ll finish your stroll at the Roman amphitheater, which overlooks the beach and the Tarragona port.
After visiting Tarragona, depart to the Penedes Wine Country enjoying a ride on a highway surrounded of pine trees and carob tree fields, with the Mediterranean sea in the distance.
The Penedès county is home to the best cava and wine cellars in the area. We’ll visit one of our favorite wineries, learn about cava and wine making, and of course enjoy some wine tasting.
After the cellar, a short ride accross the vineyards will take you to a local restaurant where you’ll be able to enjoy a traditional Catalan lunch.
After lunch, hop in the car again to be taken back to Barcelona. Use this last ride to discuss the day with your guide, ask questions or get recommendations for the rest of your stay. Or if you prefer, take a nap to help you digest all the food and wine!
You’ll be dropped back to your hotel or apartment, or any other location within the city limits of your choice.
Our Tarragona Wine Tours are perfect for those who enjoy visiting old stones, but also a nice glass of wine. They are a specially good choice in the Autumn and Winter, as in Tarragona the weather is warmer, and the temperature in the cellars is constantly fresh but not chilly (precisely for that, it’s also great to escape the Summer hit for a while). August through December are the busiest, and therefore, more exciting times at the winery: from the harvest and initial wine making, to the preparation for the big Christmas sales.
If you are traveling with kids, some wineries can offer them water or grape juice during the tasting. But unless your whole family is into wine and your kids have already an interest in ti, the Tarragona and Sitges tour works best for families.
If you have walking issues or use a wheelchair, take into account that there’s irregular and cobble-stoned pavement in some areas of Tarragona and part of the visit is uphill. There area also stairs to get to the cellars in most wineries: let us know in advance so we can take you to a winery with no stairs.
If you are a wine connoisseur, don’t miss our Priorat wine tours from Barcelona.

|AVAILABLE||Monday through Sunday|
|SOME SITES CLOSED||On Mondays the Roman sites in Tarragona are closed, but they can be seen from outside pretty well.|
|WEEKENDS||During the weekends the cellars only offer tours in Catalan or Spanish, as that's when the local public can go. We headed for Tarragona and its Roman ruins, followed by a splendid tour of the winery Recaredo in the Penedes area. We were also impressed with the chauffeured service provided.
