Are you a wine lover? Have you ever been on a wine cellar? Do you enjoy wine tastings? Did you know there is a wine country area just one hour drive of Barcelona?
The Penedes county is the cradle of Cava, the local sparkling, and one of the best wine regions near Barcelona. Just in the city of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia there are over a hundred wineries. But going on your own can be tricky: taking the train, crossing the bridge over the river to the village and navigating the streets, then finding a winery that is open… You might want to join a group tour, but most tour operators just take you to the large industrial wineries, not the small family-owned ones that have that authentic feel (and award-winning wines).
We have created this tour to take you to those wineries that are unique for the beauty of their cellars, their family history, their traditional processes and of course, their wonderful wines. Places you wouldn’t find on your own, but that will become a highlight of your trip.
Final itinerary and timings might vary due to many factors (traffic, winery availability…)
Your private tour guide and your driver will pick you up at your location in Barcelona city and drive you along the Llobregat river all the way to the Penedès County. On the way your guide will start filling you in about the local wine history and point out at relevant landmarks that you’ll be passing by.
In our Barcelona cava tours we offer you a range of wineries to visit: from monumental ones to family-owned, organic, artisan, award-winners… Some are located in the countryside and surrounded by vineyards, while other are urban cellars. So always taking into account your comments, we’ll try to choose two cellars that are different enough.
The Penedès Wine Country is one of the most popular wine countries around Barcelona, and despite being famous for their cava (sparkling wines), they also produce beautiful whites, reds and rosés. So for instance, the first cellar could be mostly dedicated to wine and located in the countryside near the vineyards.
The visit of the cellars lasts around 1 hour, and is followed by a wine tasting of around 30 minutes.
A scenic drive along local roads surrounded by vineyards will take you to the next winery in your tour.
The secon cellar, for instance, could be a cava cellar within the village. It makes a nice contrast, as the process of cava making is different from that of wine.
We know some great cava wineries near Barcelona, where the locals are proud of their products and their family tradition, so this is not just about entering a cellar, drinking and leaving: they want you to get introduced to their brand philosophy, their history and their dreams, and they do that while showing you around their facilities. And only then, they’ll consider you are ready to taste their wines. Trust us, nothing tastes better than wine after having met and got to know their wine makers! And that’s why in our Barcelona cava tours, we want to you to connect with this authenticity.
After the cellar, a short ride accross the vineyards will take you to a local restaurant where you’ll be able to enjoy a traditional Catalan lunch.
After lunch, hop in the car again to be taken back to Barcelona. Use this last ride to discuss the day with your guide, ask questions or get recommendations for the rest of your stay. Or if you prefer, take a nap to help you digest all the food and wine!
You’ll be dropped back to your hotel or apartment, or somewhere for a late lunch on your own, or in any other location within the city limits of your choice.
This tour is perfect for those who are into wine and enjoy visiting cellars and tasting wine. August through December are the busiest, and therefore, more exciting times at the winery: from the harvest and initial wine making, to the preparation for the big Christmas sales.
If you are traveling with kids, some wineries can offer them water or grape juice during the tasting. But unless your whole family is into wine and your kids have already an interest in it, we recommend the Chocolate & Wine tour for families.
If you have walking issues or use a wheelchair, take into account that there are stairs to get to the cellars in most wineries: let us know in advance so we can take you to a winery with no stairs.
If you are up for a longer day, add a couple of hours to turn your tour into a full day and stay for lunch in the wine country, or consider mixing the wine country with some other destination (for instance, our Montserrat Wine Tour).
If you are a lot into wine, check out our other Barcelona winery tours.
We can only secure a guide for you after full payment has been received. Don’t wait until last-minute: we often book out in high season, and wineries sell out, too.
Tour availability and timing depends on the cellars availability.
This tour can't be organized last-minute.
These Barcelona Cava Tours are:
|AVAILABLE||Monday through Sunday|
|WEEKENDS||During the weekends the cellars only offer tours in Catalan or Spanish, as that's when the local public can go. Your guide will be translating for you in a low voice, in order not to disturb the rest of the visitors. Groups might also be larger than during the week, too, for the same reason.|

We had so much fun on our half day wine tour with Miriam! She is well informed about the wineries, wine making process, and wine history of the region. Plus along the way she was generous with her knowledge of the city and country, adding so much valueable information to our trip. We visited two wineries, both with excellent wines, and very good prices. It was nice to get out of the city and see the surrounding area. We had so much fun and I could have spent much more time with her.
Marta took us to the wine country to two wine makers. We can highly recommend Gramona - it was an excellent tour. The 2nd wine maker was also great! We had a wonderful lunch which involved into a unique experience with local winemakers.
It was about 40 min drive to our first stop and it was an organic farming winery. it was very cozy and after the walk in the cellar where they explained how they made wine there was a tasting. After the tasting you could purchase their products. Then we went to the other cellar and it was a cava-only winery which had specialized on ageing cava. This place was the high-point for me as the family behind the winery were very keen on keeping their products at excellent quality. The "grandpa" of the family also kept very old equipment and barrels that where several hundred years old so we got a picture of how they made wine back then. The tasting here was very exciting as they even had "ice-wine" and marc and not just cava. on our ay back to the hotel we got tips on where to eat near our hotel and it was excellent food there! Marta and the driver where very friendly and everyone had a very good time!
